Omron and Renesas Team Up for Capacitive Touch Screens
Omron and Renesas Technology have entered into a joint venture to co-develop capacitive touch screens. Omron makes touch sensors, and Renesas makes micro-controllers. Renesas will use Omron's touch sensors to make a wide array of touch-sensitive interfaces for consumer electronics, including mobile phones. By combining the sensor and micro-controller into one chip, the accuracy of the touch sensor will be improved. Other benefits Renesas and Omron expect to realize include reduced power consumption, smaller sizes, and reduced costs of incorporating touch technology into devices.
Micro-LED Backlights Could Bring OLED Performance to LCD Screens
AT CES this week, Rohinni demonstrated its micro-LED technology, and provided a glimpse at new backlight technology it's working on for the LCD display panels used in phones. While most LED chips are around 1mm, Rohinni's micro-LEDs are many times smaller and can be placed precisely on thin, flexible plastic sheets.
Hands on with the Huawei Mate S
The Mate S is Huawei's new global flagship phone. Like most new flagships, it sports a 5 inch display, metal body, fingerprint sensor, and some advanced camera technology.
Apple Improves iPhone 6s and 6s Plus with 3D Touch
Apple today announced the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, which are enhanced versions last year's iPhones. Like the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the 6s and 6s Plus have 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screens, respectively, slim metal designs, and fingerprint readers built into the home button.
Synaptics Shrinks Fingerprint Sensors
At CES this week, Synaptics is demonstrating a new generation of smaller fingerprint sensors that offer the ease and reliability of a touch sensor in the space of a swipe-style sensor. The company has a prototype working in a Samsung Galaxy S5.
Microsoft Testing Advanced Pre-Touch Sensing On Phones
Microsoft recently demonstrated new touchscreen technology that can anticipate users' actions and call up different controls, options, or menus to suit the current task. Pre-touch sensing helps the phone determine how the user is gripping the phone, as well as where the user's fingers are approaching the display.
