Qualcomm Declares Minor Victory in Broadcom Squabble
Today Qualcomm said that a federal judge has dismissed one of the complaints filed against it by rival wireless chip-maker Broadcom. Broadcom had complained that Qualcomm reaped undue royalties from patents that were exhausted. The judge presiding over the case threw out the complaint because Broadcom failed to list any specific patents. The two companies have been battling one another in various courts over wireless technology patent and licensing issues.

Qualcomm today said Broadcom's acquisition offer simply isn't good enough as currently proposed. The companies met earlier this week to go over some of the finer points of Broadcom's $121 billion bid to purchase Qualcomm, and Qualcomm still came away leery that the deal won't work out.

Qualcomm's board of directors today unanimously rejected Broadcom's Nov. 6 offer to buy the company in a deal that would have been valued at approximately $130 billion.

Qualcomm warned investors that two of its most important customers have threatened to take their business elsewhere should Qualcomm be acquired by Broadcom. Qualcomm didn't name the customers, but said together they contribute a combined $1 billion in chip revenue.

Qualcomm today said it won't entertain the idea of replacing its board of directors with substitutes nominated by Broadcom. Earlier this month, Broadcom nominated 11 people to Qualcomm's board of directors.
