T-Mobile's 3G Network Goes Live Today

Today T-Mobile announced the official launch of its UMTS/HSDPA 3G network in New York City. T-Mobile subscribers with phones that have 1700 MHz radios in them will be able to access both voice and data wireless services on the new network. They will automatically connect to the best available signal, and those that connect to the 3G data network should see faster data speeds. The existing line-up of phones that can access the 1700 MHz AWS spectrum includes handsets from Nokia and Samsung. T-Mobile also said it will be introducing an HSDPA phone, as well as "data-centric, all-in-one devices" in the coming months. T-Mobile will roll out the 3G network to other markets during the rest of 2008, and expects to have most of its data footprint covered by the end of the year. T-Mobile also said it will continue to build out and support its Wi-Fi-based Hotspot@Home products and services.

Sprint Nextel

What good is it for T-Mobile to acquire a company with incompatible networks. T-mobile is GSM, Sprint is CDMA, Nextel is Iden. They have tried cross talk but not very well. Nextel has a problem with bad dealers.... Sprint and Nextel, and T-mobile lack continuous coverage. Let AT&T and T-Mobile merge (both GSM). Sprint can be absorbed by Verizon (CDMA). As far as Nextel it may be to little to late. It would have mad a great nationwide public safety network.. But do you really think they could agree on anything.

Dealer for 22 years
Sprint uses the 1900 PCS band, which is what T-Mobile also uses. There would have to be some money spent but Sprint's CDMA/Iden networks could be shut down in favor of GSM, which is what T-Mobile would probably do anyways. It would take awhile, prob...

First off, why would tmo, which is a much lager company than att, merge with att.

Second off, i use tmo and i know it doesnt have the best coverage but it works for and i know the last thing i want is for it to be taken over by att so i can pay the...

Why buy Sprint Its simple 1900 MHz spectrum. T-mobile already has the 1900 MHZ cell sites they use up. All they need to go is re-configure the radios with the added frequencies, and bam more capacity, etc, etc. Dumping Nextel is logical here as...

3G Coverage Map?

Is there any sort of coverage map for the 3G service available in the NYC area?
Not yet, I'm sure it will pop up on their website soon.

this is an SE phone

though T-Mobile doesn't announce which HSDPA phone is, it's SE Z780, the first SE phone after 5 years
and the new UMTS works rather well in NYC, and seems to be pretty complete
