Google today finally unveiled its mobile software platform. So far all that has been revealed about the platform is that it will be free and open source. Though details of the OS itself are slim, Google announced a host of handset and carrier partners. The OS will require new hardware and HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung have all agreed to manufacture devices. In the US, Sprint and T-Mobile have joined to launch devices based on the Google platform while elsewhere China Mobile, Telefonica and TIM have signed on as well.

Advertising

Let the advertising begin! Yea.

Am I the only one not looking forward to being bombarded with ads on my phone? I guess it is inevitable.

Open Source

The best part is that it is free and open source so if it supports atleast one HTC phone, it would be much easier to port it to other ARM processor phones. This is great news.

what benefit is there to the two biggest carriers? how are they going to make money off google phones? open OS? sounds like a support nightmare.
Because they won't remain #1 if someone else comes out with something better. How many companies throughout history have been knocked off the block by companies with new, innovative products or services.
Palm comes to mind. They were at the top of ...

No suprise

That Verizon and ATT were not included. ATT has the iphone and Verizon is too much of a control freak company to allow the Google business model. Good news for Sprint and T Mobile though.
It doesn't have to do with Google's business model, it's a matter of VZW's borderline obessesive compulsive control over their f-ing UI.

I work for VZW and after its all said and done, that has always been my biggest gripe. 👿

With that sai...

Seems............

A little anti-climatic if you ask me. Hope the product is more exciting than the announcement.
