Mobile Barcodes Could Be Used for Airline Boarding Passes

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) recently agreed on a global mobile barcode standard. This new standard could allow people to use mobile phones to check in for flights and use them as boarding passes instead of the traditional paper boarding passes that are issued at check-in counters. The barcode would be sent to a traveler's phone when they book the ticket. The standard uses existing barcodes that are common across the US, Europe and Japan. The IATA hopes to have the barcoding system in place by the end of 2010.
