Asus Goes Big with Zenfone 11 Ultra

Asus has revealed its latest global flagship phone: the Zenfone 11 Ultra. This year's model abandons the compact form factor that was a hallmark of the Zenfone series in recent years; the 11 Ultra has a 6.78" FHD+ AMOLED display, whereas last year's model was just 5.9". This change in strategy allows Asus to all but combine its ordinary and gaming lineups; the Zenfone 11 Ultra is basically the same phone as the ROG Phone 8, with only a different outer design. The 11 Ultra has all of the top-end specs expected of a flagship phone in 2024. Unusually, it also includes a 3.5mm headset jack, which supports Hi-res Audio and Dirac Virtuo. The US model has very good support for T-Mobile and AT&T 5G and 4G networks. It will be available in four colors: black, gray, blue, and sand. The Zenfone 11 Ultra is powered by a Qualcomm's current best chip, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and Android 14. The chip is paired with 12 GB of LPDDR5x RAM and 256 GB of UFS 4.0 storage.
The large 5,500 mAh battery can be charged wired or wirelessly. Wired fast charging is supported up to 65 watts, although no charger is included with the phone. The phone supports both the USB-PD fast charging standard and Qualcomm's Quick Charge 5.0. Wireless charging up to 15 watts is supported via the Qi 1.3 standard (Qi 2.0 chargers are compatible). Asus claims the battery will last for 26 hours of "regular use".
The three rear cameras include dedicated telephoto and wide lenses. The main camera has a 50 megapixel Sony IMX890 sensor with 6-axis gimbal OIS. The 32 megapixel telephoto camera offers 3x optical zoom and also has OIS. The wide-angle camera is 13 megapixel. The front camera is 32 megapixel with pixel-binned 8-megapixel output. It has an RGBW sensor for better low-light performance. The main camera can record video at up to 8K (24fps), or 4K in HDR10+. It also supports 4K time-lapse and 4K slow-motion.
The 6.78-inch AMOLED display offers FHD+ resolution, dynamic refresh up to 120 Hz (144 Hz for gaming), and brightness up to 1,600 nits (2,500 peak). It's protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
Other features include Wi-Fi 7, NFC, and Bluetooth 5.4. Via Bluetooth, it supports aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless. It also has an in-display fingerprint reader.
The aluminum body is 100% recycled and its display is composed of over one-fifth recycled glass. The phone is rated IP68 for water and dust resistance.
AI-powered Noise Cancellation zeros out background noise on all types of calls. Asus promises that a future software update will bring several other new AI features: real-time language translation on phone calls, AI-generated wallpaper, and real-time audio transcription in the sound recorder app.
