Sprint Leaves SpectrumCo To Cable Cos

Sprint has exited SpectrumCo, the cable company joint venture that won big in last year's AWS auction with licenses to cover most of the populated US. An earnings filing from Time Warner Cable and a subsequent earnings call revealed that Sprint gave its notice that it would exit 60 days ago, and the other companies have purchased Sprint's share in the venture. Sprint no longer has access to 1700 MHz spectrum and is likely counting on iDEN airwaves once cleared as well as its WiMax spectrum for network expansion. Though Sprint exited this spectrum venture, they have recently teamed with Clearwire in a WiMax venture and still are working with the Cable companies on their Pivot content venture.

do you think it's because they cannot really afford it? With the merger and all that debt, also with losing subscribers to other carriers it may cause them to tighten up just to keep the focus on wimax.

They've secured a lot of spectrum via their agreements with clearwire. They have almost 100 Mhz of MMDS spectrum in some markets.
