Motorola's Mobile Unit Suffering

Article Comments  49

Motorola announced a shortfall in profits for the second quarter of 2007, and reduced the outlook for the entire year for the mobile device division. Motorola is now predicting that the mobile phone arm of the business will lose money in 2007 based on lower sales volumes in Europe and Asia. Though official quarterly results won't be posted until July 19th, Stu Reed has been promoted to president of Motorola's mobile devices business. Additionally, Motorola CEO Ed Zander's job may be in jeopardy. He narrowly survived a proxy battle earlier this year with stockholder Carl Icahn, who owns a large stake of the company. Other C-level executives were shuffled around several months ago. Motorola has not commented on whether or not Zander will go, but stockholders are displeased and analysts believe the move will happen soon.

CEO SHOULD BE KICKED OUT

when people asked the CEO of Moto, what after RAZR, his answer was, "Well, more RAZR's" and that too would be pretty'd up (I think I am making up a word here...) in 3 or 4 different shades of pink, red, blue, gold, and all other colors known to mankind.

how can anybody sell a much costlier 3G version of the phone for even a few bucks more, if the cheaper 2g version is available for free.. irrespective of all cool features, most people yet use their phone for...... making calls.... and hence to most people, there is no difference between a 3g phone and a 2g phone (especially if they are in the same casing, irrespective of what is the guts of each model..).. how can a CEO not understand this..
or kicked in his suffering unit
I know someone who works at Moto, in the cellphone division. He says that, while Zander seems to know what needs to be fixed and how to go about it, time after time he's being stymied by the family that owns the company. His hands are kinda tied, alle...

Mr. Zander is not the problem at Motorola. He has made significant improvement in a cantakerous bureaucracy, while fighting off a vulture in Icahn. What's needed at Motorola is more of what Zander did in his first 12 months - and definitely not a re...

Stop Trying to be "PHAT,YO!"

I've been a garbage man for 17 years. I have also worked for a Verizon agent on and off over the last 7 years.
I used a Star Tac for 5 years. I counted no less than 15 occasions where I had dropped the phone off my belt from a moving garbage truck onto the pavement. Each time I just put the battery back on and went on with my day. My E815 didn't even make it to my "new every 2" date.
My point being...MOTOROLA should just go back to making good, durable phones again.
Nevermind trying to R&D models intended JUST for kids or to market through the next Keanu Reeves film. The StarTac proved that a phone didn't have to be "PHAT, YO" ( the chocolate...what a piece of...chocolate) to be a huge seller. Who's the nimrod who made the decision to se...

That's what happens

When you have one big hit, the RAZR and you try and make all you phones look like that phone. I can't tell the difference between the myriad of RAZR look a like phone in the Moto line, except for the fact that they are all crap.
i will admit u are right. but i think moto will come back, the razr 2 is nothing new still a razr.

MOT now 3rd behind SS

http://www.ovum.com/news/euronews.asp?id=5918 » is an article about that.. SS sold about 37 mil units.. moto estimates 35-36 mil units...

this is a sad day.. what a diff one yr makes, from attempting to challenge Nokia to losing your position in the line.. ☹️
I guess it's a sad day if you're a Motorola employee or stockholder. Probably not for everyone else. Frankly, Samsung has been making better products than Moto for a while now.
I question the numbers of SS. My guess is that they sold 20 mil units and sent out 17 mil as warranty replacements.

Keep building em' in China.....

Back when VZW had the E815 I went through no less than 8 of them due to shoddy build quality, displays going black, hinges failing, creaky poor tactile feeling, just plain poor quality, same with Q also....pure $hit.
Agreed. Not only is the manufacturing moving there, but also the development (India / China). Quality (hardware and software) is not something that can be fixed by throwing a large quantity of cheap labor at. Hopefully the money they save on labor ...

They Brought It On Themselves

Poor Moto. But what do you expect? Their quality control is crap, their software is crap tons of bugs and slow-as-hell OSes.

Their phones release with buggy software, and fall apart too soon (remember the V265? Wotta POS that was.)

Moto seems to think that 'teh pretty' will save them (RAZR styling, cute marketing). But if you don't execute on the basics, your customers will leave you, its just a matter of when.

The success of the RAZR only delayed the inevitable. Moto needs to get better at software, and quality control, and they need to release some reliable phones. They need to care about quality, not just looks.
Couldnt have said it better myself.

I think the quality of Motorola phones has vastly improved. Unfortunately, it may have been done too late.
...
I agree. I loved Motorola in the past and wouldn't take anything else. Then when I started to get V-series flip phones, I had problems with the earpiece not producing any sound during a phone call. First it was the V505, which I was hard on, but it...

Oh No Moto!

Is it me or does it seem that they are copying lg's handsets? Making LG junior handsets and charging more for them is not a real way to drive the business. I think they would have made more money making the razr as basic as possible and make money on the phone as a low end handset.

They'll be okay, as soon as they make a slider Q!

Motorola, down fall is marketing. Take for xample the Rokr E2 & E6. Both phones run the newer os but are sold over seas only this is stupid. The Rokr E2 is actually more advanced in some aspects than a smartphone according to many reviews. But Motorol...

If this is true.. Which it isn't, it sure would explain why Motorola sucks so bad. Lg and Motos are the only phones I get returned daily. I'm sure most salesmen will agree with me on that. Every once in a while Samsung will release a bad phone, but no...

Fix the hardware!!

Well it sucks, maybe they'll put out a more reliable phone. They should fix the OS also. Maybe steal Sanyo's OS.
MOTOROLA is always doing FORM OVER FUNCTION. I would guess stealing Sanyo's OS might be a violation of some patents, just a hunch...
