In a recent conference call, Palm CEO Ed Colligan reversed course on earlier statements that Palm would introduce a Linux-Garnet hybrid operating system on devices later this year. He was quoted saying that the new OS will not be available to consumers until sometime in 2008. Palm Treo smartphones will continue to be sold with the current Garnet OS and Windows Mobile until this new OS, called Palm OS II, is available. Colligan reaffirmed Palm's commitment to both operating systems, but went on to mention that Palm plans to grow the Foleo product, which is Linux based, into its own computing platform.

Wasn't someone going to buy PALM?

This could be the best thing to happen to them, unless they want to fall into the "where are they now" category of former wireless phones such as BlaPUNKT, DiamondTel, OKI, Fujitsu, and Technophone, that's right, I am kickin' it old school y'all! Obviously, PALM has lost touch with the "prosumer" here, instead using resources that should be used elsewhere and launching products that are late to market and too pricey.
I think the WHOLE PDA world has lost touch with customers....

If they don't do something very soon then they basically won't matter by this time next year.

Maybe they should just donate the OS to Linux Mobile (LiMo) foundation? That way they can proliferate the OS more at the cost of (a little) less control.

hmm....
Umm... the iPhone didn't do squat in this issue. Look at Apple, their stock has gone down over $10 in a few days due to the high amount of returns they are seeing from the iPhone. Most people bought the iPhone thinking that it had ALL the features o...

Thanks Folio

I'm sure the development of this useless product sapped resources away from the Linux Palm OS. Good job Palm. I guess this confirms that the Gandolf, due to be released later this year, will be more of the same that we have come to expect from Palm. Little to no improvements with a high price tag. 👿
Blame Palm's poor management skills. They're the ones who decided to put the money into developing an almost completely redundant device (I say almost because there are handful of people who might actually use the Foleo). It's kinda sad to watch, an...
