Google Revamps Maps As a Platform for Developers

Google today announced Google Maps Platform, a repackaged set of tools for developers to use when creating Maps-based products. The new tools are specifically aimed at services that offer ridesharing and asset tracking. Ridesharing companies will be able to embed Google Maps into their own apps. Companies that need to keep tabs on assets will be able to visualize where vehicles have traveled, plan routes, and handle complex trips. In order to do this, Google streamlined its 18 Maps APIs into three branches, Maps, Routes, and Places. Google says developers can put the new tools to use without updating their code. Developers will be able to consume up to $200 worth of service each month. Google will only bill those who exceed the $200 monthly amount, though the company believes most apps and services will remain in the free tier. Last, Google says as developers' businesses grow, or usage spikes, Google Maps can scale to handle the load. Google hopes developers put these new tools to work in order to bring even more functionality to Google Maps.
