FitBit today extended the life cycle of the Pebble smartwatch by six months. In December 2016, when FitBit acquired certain assets from Pebble, it said it would support Pebble smartwatches through the end of 2017. Today, the company said it would give Pebble smartwatch owners another six months, keeping most services up and running through June 30, 2018. After June 20, the Pebble app store, the Pebble forum, voice recognition features, SMS and email replies, and timeline pins from third-party apps will all cease to work. Other hardware functions will remain intact. Pebble said the Pebble mobile app will remain functional with Android 8.1 Oreo and 11.x, respectively, but warned that future updates to Android and iOS may break any remaining Pebble Watch functions. Despite the reprieve, FitBit is asking Pebble Watch owners and developers alike to move on and adopt the FitBit Ionic smartwatch. FitBit is offering owners of the Pebble Watch a $50 discount off the purchase of an Ionic watch.
