CTIA Wireless 2004

Intro Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Wrap-Up Comments  77

Mar 20, 2004, 7:00 PM   by Rich Brome

Live daily coverage of CTIA Wireless 2004, North America's premier cell phone event. Exclusive photos and hot info fron the show floor in Atlanta. Major announcements from Kyocera, Motorola, Nokia, Siemens, LG, and more.

CTIA Wireless is North America's premier cell phone event. In past years, the event was associated closely with CDMA and TDMA, due to the dominanace of those standards in the Americas. But with the recent rise of GSM in this part of the world, CTIA Wireless has become a more diverse show. And with the recent emergence of EDGE, PTT, and EV-DO as U.S.-centric technologies, CTIA Wireless is quickly becoming one of the world's most important technology events.

This year, Atlanta is the host city. Last year's show in New Orleans saw such exciting announcements as Verizon's plans to launch EV-DO commercially, and LG's first GSM phones for the U.S. New phones announced included the Samsung A600, Sanyo 8100, Kyocera Slider, Audiovox 8900, and Danger's color-display Hiptop.

This year's show is expected to see the launch of even more new phones, including the Kyocera Koi, Audiovox 8610, and a whopping 14 new models from LG, including the VX-8000, the country's first EV-DO phone.

Last year's hot topics were Push-To-Talk and camera phones. If last week's announcements at the CeBIT show in Hannover are any indication, megapixel camera phones will be 2004's hot topic. Two other technologies expected to grab headlines are EDGE and EV-DO. And finally, with AT&T Wireless planning to launch WCDMA in several cities as early as July, it's possible that America's first WCDMA phones could be unveiled at CTIA.

Check back throughout the week for Phone Scoop's daily reports from the show floor in Atlanta.

Predictions for 2005

Okay, now that the show is over, it's time to predict what we'll see at the 2005 show in New Orleans. πŸ˜‰

My predictions, in order of likelihood, are:
  • 2 megapixel cameras
  • Push-To-Stream Video
  • OLED displays (main, not just external)
  • The first commercial EV-DV (release C) phone, but only if Sprint chooses that route

Anyone else want to hazard a guess?
I agree with the 2 megapixel camera phones and possibly even pushing 3 and more that can record video. I also agree with the OLED displays, especially if it can help battery life. Also more high end phones and PDA phones without cameras due to the b...

...
One more prediction. Several handset makers will introduce phones that support cellular and wireless voice over IP. In other words they will connect to voice over IP operating on wireless networks such as 802.11b and then seamless switch to the cell...

My guess (and hope) is that the MP3 and video playing will take off. Once memory cards in the 1-2GB range start to become more common, I think these multimedia features are a natural next step.

Wouldn't it be cool if Nokia (or whoever) and Apple ma...

Moto V65P

Does any one know if verizon will carry the motorola v65p? release date? will vzw ptt service get better anytime soon?

Thanks for your response.
Actually, if I were you I would highly recommend sprint's ready link service or Nextel's PTT, Verizon's PTT client is far beyond acceptable, regardless of the handset, actually, both ATTWS and Cingular will be soon releasing PTT services using GSM, wh...

AT&T Wireless & Cingular

Does anyone know when the AT&T and Cingular merger is going to kick in? Also does anyone no who's going to carry the new clamshell Nokia 6225i? Also why in the heck does AT&T get either the wack phones or get the hot ones way late? What up with that? 😑
From what i have been told and from what is being said it looks like it will take place by March 05' and as soon as Jan 05'. The nokia 6225i is the Verizon phone and the 7200 is the Cingular/Att version. The reason ATT gets such crap phones is why...

Verizons new technology

πŸ™‚ the New 1 x ev-do will perfect verizon ptt service my rep say the service will be unbelievable and the all the phones coming will compare to no other
1x ev-do won't do anymore than the technology already slated for release. PTT isn't directly correlated with 1x ev-do anyway and is more how the packets are handled rather than the pipe they are sent over.

Any sanyo's?

Where there any Sanyo's. Im really intrested in a Sanyo phone form Japan that has a FM radio. the A5503SA hopefully it comes to the US.
No. Sanyo, being exclusive to Sprint, generally leaves things up to them when it comes to marketing and PR for phones. All Sprint was showing at CTIA was the 7300, which you probably know about already.

I did get the scoop on the new 8200 recently,...

What is with wireless consumers???

So let me pose a question to all the flip phone hounds and I want a 300.00 world phone with a camera, video recording and bluetooth for free consumers.

WAKE UP!!!!!

When did you people begin assuming it is your right to get a mega-high end phone with any carrier. Of course we are going to give you a good deal when you first sign service with us, that is our JOB. But a year down the road, when you come in to upgrade your phone, we offer you discounts and several phones that are free, you walk right over to the 300.00 phone mentioned above and tell us that unless we give this to you for free you're going to cancel service??? Why???? Because I stomped my feet, threw a temper tantrum, and still didn't get what I wanted??? And hear me when I...

First, I would like to know where that rant came from. As nearly as I can tell, the proceeding 20 posts do not contain anything that would justify that rant. Secondly, not very many customers, from my observations, complain about not getting the coo...

I want to thank-you for the thorough report you did on the CTIA. Better than all the other sites. Thanks.
Thanks! πŸ™‚
I agree. Excellent job and I agree with a lot of the points you made in your wrapup. Keep up the good work!

New Nokia's for CDMA...who get's em?

Hey Richard...Just curious where all 3 of the new Nokia's are going to for CDMA...Verizon or Sprint? πŸ™‚ I'm with Verizon and would be interested in any of them, particularily the 6015i. Thanks!
Chris
Oh also, when? πŸ™‚ (sorry, forgot to ask this on my 1st question!)
Oops! Sorry Rich/All...should have looked further into the site and could have answered part of my question! Saw the 3205 went to Sprint, but what about the 6015i and the clamshell? Thanks again!
Chris
Hard to say. Nokia seems to have developed a good relationship with Sprint these days, but I know they are also working very hard to forge stronger ties with Verizon.

I wouldn't be surprised to see both companies pick up the 6255i, frankly, and Ver...

Any talk of release date for LG-7000 or 8000 for verizon??

any info?
I saw both phones -- the 8000 looks a little gaudy, but the 7000 was NICE. The LG rep said "month or so" for release on the 7000 and just "2nd Half" for the 8000. She didn't mention much about the carriers they were for.

Audiovox CMD-9900

Has the release date been updated for this phone? VZ website says 1st quarter, 2004. And it is tri-mode, correct?
The CDM-9900 is a Tri mode phone, as far as the release date rumors say the first 2 weeks of April, with VZW the saying goes when you see it believe it.

a camera ph with dual color displays for VZ....???

so i can't get a straight answer from anyone at verizon...the service is great, but their phones suck!!! i just want a camera ph with dual color displays, and no one knows when its coming out!!! i get different answers from different people on different days!!! anybody have a clue???
The Audiovox 9900 should be the first. Shouldn't be too much longer for that one, although Verizon's testing process makes release dates impossible to predict with accuracy - there's never a set date until you actually see it in stores.

Hopefully Verizon will release the Samsung sch-a670,as well. Can't seem to get any info on this phone, though.

V710 and 840

I am willing to bet a penny that the V710 will come out no sooner than April 30th and no later than June 30th. Of course, it will be no surprise to me if I am wrong, but I am still willing to bet that penny. As for the 840, I also noticed the including and now excluding of Bluetooth in that phone. I am willing to bet another penny that that phone will not have Bluetooth after all. Agree, disagree?
Well, having been there and discussed both topics with the product managers at the Motorola booth, I think I can provide answers.

June is their target date for the V710. If all goes well, that's when we'll see it. Of course, this is Verizon we're t...

V710 vs. A840?

It look like these two are pretty similar in terms of features and styling. Any opinions on which would be better to get? I'm planning on upgrading by the end of the year. Thanks for your input...
Well it all depends if you travel outside the United States a lot (especially to Europe). The only difference between these 2 phones is that the V710 is AMPS(analog) and CDMA and the A840 is CDMA and GSM. Notice that the A840 has a little global log...

The V710 has Bluetooth, while the A840 has world roaming (GSM). Other than that, yes, they're very similar.
