Ryanair First Airline With Cell Service

Ryanair, an Irish budget airline today announced it will begin to offer cellular service on its planes in mid-2007. If the plan is approved by European regulatory bodies, the airline will outfit 50 of its jets with the OnAir service next year, and will install the service in the rest of its fleet in 2008. This will allow flyers to make calls, text and even get online using their mobile phones. OnAir is an joint venture between Airbus and SITA that provides cellular service by installing picocells on planes to create an on-board network and then relays those signals via satellite to ground networks.
