Google Creates YouTube Go with Slow Networks In Mind

Google today released YouTube Go, a version of the mobile video app that has been optimized for slow and inconsistent wireless networks. The idea, says Google, is to allow people to get the most from YouTube even under poor network conditions. Google created the app with several key tenets in mind. First, it should help people find "relatable" videos on the launch screen, which means content that is popular with people/friends who are nearby. Second, the app was built for offline use. People can preview videos so they can get a better sense of what they're about to watch before viewing. Users can then opt to download compressed versions for easier offline viewing. Third, the app adds tools allowing users to select the resolution of streamed or saved videos in order to provide control over data consumption. Last, YouTube Go includes sharing tools for sending videos to others without using data, even when offline. YouTube Go is being made available in India first, with other regions to follow. People may sign up to gain early access to the app.
