Intel to Buy Movidius for AI Camera Tech
Sep 6, 2016, 7:15 AM by Eric M. Zeman
Intel today said it has agreed to buy Movidius in order to supplement its RealSense computer vision technology. Intel says Movidius' visual processing unit can help it bring computer vision applications to market faster. Movidius' technology already powers drones and other products from DJI, FLIR, Google, and Lenovo. Intel's RealSense cameras use cameras as the "eyes", a CPU as the "brain" and a vision processor as the "visual cortex" in order to allow computers to understand the world around them. Movidius' VPU technology will allow RealSense to track, navigate, map, and recognize scenes and objects. Intel plans to first use Movidius and RealSense for augmented/virtual reality, drones, robotics, and digital security cameras, with more applications to follow. Intel last year showed off a version of its RealSense camera for smartphones. Intel expects the deal to close later this year.
