Verizon Wireless today officially launched the previously-rumored Samsung A990, the country's first camera phone with 3.2 megapixel resolution. Advanced camera capabilities include an auto-focus lens, flash, video capture up to one hour, business card reader, viewing via TV output, and printing via PictBridge or Bluetooth. A twisting display folds back to serve as a large viewfinder in camera mode. The high-end CDMA clamshell phone also supports EVDO high-speed data, including Verizon's VCast and VCast Music services. Other advanced features of the phone include a microSD memory card slot, Bluetooth, and location API to support GPS-based navigation services. The A990 is available today online for $350 after rebates, with a two-year contract. It will be available in stores on July 24.

Cannot compete with GSM phones...

Am I missing something or is this just a watered down version of a real multimedia devices such as Nokia N80 and other N-series GSM phones...

All this phone has is 3,2MPx and well, that's it. Others have that and so much more. But I guess this is good for CDMA...

Nice, VZW PWNS technology

Best phone commercially availible in this country. I hope this lights a fire under the supposedly better GSM.
Phonescoop was talking about the Sony Ericsson K790 at one time, which was going to have the Sony cybershot technology paired with a 3.2 megapixel camera as well. Do you know when this is coming out to entice the GSM'ers? Also, which has a better came...

I shouldve waited....

I have the LG 8300 but this phone is NICE!!!!!

3.2 megapixels???

Is it possible to renew my contract and get this phone even though I just got service like 1 month ago????
i wish i would have waited for for my that i swiched to cingular there is no chance for me to switch back...all these new phones like the a990, chocolate, and RAZR K1c...i'm a bit jealous...ohhh well, there are always new phone coming out......
You are past the 15 day satisfaction guarantee that VZW offers on all phones that they sell, so you won't be able to take the 8300 back.

You could just buy the new phone on a new line of service and just go with one of VZW's family share plans.
just ebay the 8300 you should get 150+ for itthen buy this full retail, you can still send in the rebate, i do it all the time. so 520 full retail-150 you made on 8300, you are at 370 send in $50 rebate you are at $320.
Unfortunately, since you literally just renewed your contract, you will have to wait until your next upgrade date to get this phone at the discounted price. If, however, you are dying to have this phone right now, save up some cash and buy it from a d...

its fat!

fat in, big, bulgy, uncomfortable to carry around.

thats all
Actually its a surprisingly small and sleek phone .. check out the specs... Have you actually carried it around to know it is uncomfortable??

this thing is butt ugly IMO, who needs 3 meg camera on there cell phone anyways. regardless of that why leave the same lame UI on it? im waiting for the chocolate phone, new design, new UI.
My VZW LG 8300 has new customizable flash UI... it is very nice... you mean to tell me that this phone wont have it?? Surprised
To add insult to injury, if the UI wasn't bad enough, then there's the OLED outer display on a phone that obviously has a focus on it's camera.... lots of people like using the camera with the phone closed, and they can't do that with this expensive p...
on the UI on the chocolate phone, so its not a flash UI like the 8300? or it is and even further improvement on that. thanks
not the same UI from the other samsungs.

remember, the 8300 can be set just like the regular ui as default itself.

That's like saying who needs HDTV or even standard cable TV when you can watch any of the big 4 networks for free? In 5 years, you'll be wondering wh...

If there's one thing I've learned today its how to get a response. Thank you, ArmySF, for making it clear that if I want attention, just say something terribly opinionated, negative and brief! Like a flash flood, we'll all jump in and sweep ...

People who don't want to carry around a digital camera?
what I don't like is at what point does it become more of a digital camera then a cell phone..... look at the lens on this thing its huge.
the phone is way too big to be carrying around as a cell ... it seems cool i'll wait for them to come out with one that is a lot smaller ... also its very expensive ...

a990 not on phonescoop list of phones???

I have to admit that Verizon caught us by surprise... we weren't expecting it until later this month.

We'll have a full spec page for it later today, though. Promise. Wink
I hope you say it has an FM radio

Ohh Boy - ) cant wait to get my hands on this puppy - Testing Testing and More Testing

We all hope and pray that samsung wont blow it but cmon the 930 should have been an easy one to nail and they blew that big time.. D/A voice quality is the worst they have done in years. Hard to hear people, plastic feel etc...

I hope they did this one solid.. The 8300 is freaking amazing except for the huge blue tooth echo problem.. LG is showing some real hope.. If they nailed the Bluetooth the 8300 would have probably been the most perfect release of any phone i have seen..

The 990 and Chocolate have alot to live up to ..

Voice Quality Testing. Bluetooth Tetsing. Keypad usability and ruggedness. Does the earpiece get loud enough.. All these critical points that make a complex cell phone good or bad. Form Factor , Receptio...

just ordered it

ill let you know whats up when it gets here .. I called CS and they said it would be shipped today .. Verizon is my personal phone .. I have a cingular thru work .. Im getting this for one reason and one reason only .. the camera .. I've been waiting for a good camera phone .. hopefully this is it .. ill post a mini review when i get it
why would you pay that much? trust me the price will drop like a rock this thing is not gonna sell. You can get a 3 mp camera for 90 bucks these days.

you should have waited. just like the dipshits that ran out and bought razrs at launch the price ...
cuz I gotta deal face to face with the people that run out and buy an overpriced phone and expect it to be more than what it turns out to be.

Smile Smile Very Happy Drooling Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
to bad its only for verizon....

now we are close to being able to have a phone that could do everything...yeah!!!
Ah, I think this'll be much, much more eXciting Spring time next year, but we'll just have to wait and see, all I know is that I'm not currently under contract bc I'm waiting for Cingular to offer something that truly is IMPRESSIVE! ! ! ! ! ! !

Music player

If you use VerizonWireless's web site to compare this phone to another one, it reports that this phone DOES NOT have a music player. Is that correct?
this phone does have vcast music and a music player included
