LG Cooking Up Chocolate For Verizon

Article Comments  98

Jun 26, 2006, 5:55 PM   by (staff)

Although very little information is available from the FCC filings, Phone Scoop has learned that the LG VX8500 for Verizon will be a version of the Chocolate phone that has taken South Korea, and now Europe, by storm. The VX8500 still features the same slim sliding form as the original Chocolate, but the hidden D-pad keys on the original have been replaced with actual D-pad that integrates media playback controls. Features include a 1.3 Megapixel camera, Micro SD card slot, EV-DO high speed data and stereo Bluetooth (A2DP). The VX8500 also features a new version of the Verizon interface with on-screen menus for the side keys. The American Chocolate has not been announced yet, so no release date is known.

Why only 1.3 mega pixel?

Can someone give me a reasonable explanation why phones never seem to make it over the 1.3 mega pixel hurdle? I mean why spend all the money into a fancy new phone if all you get is 1.3 mega pixels?
Because the difference between 1.3 and 2 is not worth the money.

Until they come out with a CCD lens with a glass cover, the only difference you get is a slightly crisper picture and a larger, but still blurry picture.

To my eyes, 1.3 and 2 are ...

They do make phone's with camera's that are better then 1.3 mega pixels..... đŸ¤Ŗ

I can name two right away:

Samsung 990----> 3.2 mega pixel
Samsung 970----> 2.0 mega pixel

Rumors no flash, no speaker and Aug release date???

Rumors are that it lacks flash and speakerphone.

Rumor is also mid August release.

I base these rumors on articles I read from googling. If anyone knows different, please correct me.
From what I can tell this phone will have a flash UI kind of like the 8300, but with more of a music focus. it seems like it will look cooler than the typical verizon UI, but I don't know what options will be there. It does, however, have a "display...

I hate to be the bringer of bad news.... đŸ˜ĸ

There is no speaker phone..... 😲

As far as the flash the options are customizable brightness and night mode...no actual flash to be found... 👀

$500 Phone????

😈 I saw in buisness week that the LG Chocolate would be a $500 phone?? Can somebody hopefully tell me I am wrong because its deffiantly not worth that much money.
No, I called Customer Service and it's not going to be $500 @ contract price. I don't know what the cost is if it's out of contract.
...
😁 just thought i would let you all know... it is going to be 199 - 50 dollar mail in rebate at contract price
...
If I had to bet:

July 31 launch @ $199.99 2 yr contract with possible $50 rebate.... 😁

Interface

I'm sure the new interface will be as bad as the old. Verizon needs to dump the idea of it's unified interface. 😡
It has a new interface, but still has some similar aesthetics.
...
Look, I know to all of us TECH savy folks that waste our time chatting on phone scoop think that the UI could be replaced, sure. ut in the big picture, the other 95% of users don't care, There is no point in bashing it, it was a Great idea on behalf ...

the original was better

i think it is a shame that this is being changed from how LG initially had it. Instead of going with the original concept which was proven in other countries, they have to change it to make it look like an ipod knockoff. it seems like the verizon version just doesn't have the "coolness" that the european ones did. and i bet they are going to get rid of the (from what i've heard) awesome packaging in favor of a more verizon-esque lame-o standard box. too bad, but hopefully it still sells well. Good to see some innovation in design even if it is watered down by the time it gets to America.

Can anyone share the specs (size dimensions & weight) of either the expected VZW version or the Korean/European counterpart?

About the design

I personally don't like the design of the American Chocolate phone from LG. Since I've seen the Chocolate phone whenever it was launched in Korea last year(I believe it was last year.. near to the Valentine's day..), the design for the American chocolate phone(VX8500) is just so... UGLY.
I don't like the "click-wheel" part. Other parts are pretty much similar with the Original Korean Chocolate 1 phone.(Well, now the Chocolate 2 has been launched in Korea.)
I love the design of the Chocolate 2. Wish the American version had the exactly same design as the Korean Chocolate 1 or 2.

BTW, how was the European Chocolate phone?
Anybody has any pictures of European Chocolate?
I somewhat agree with you on this. The Korean/European Choc was a lot more elegant than the US version. I would gladly give up the music features of the phone to have the US version be cleaner looking and thinner (the US version appears to have put on...

hahahah! i totally understand you.. you have no idea how angry i got when i saw the american version of the chocolate. đŸ‘ŋ i seriously hate the idea of altering the smooth d-pad.. how lame.

whats in a name?

i understand the reaosn for naming phones something cool and tredy so people can refer to it in conversation. But the "razr", "blade", "the V", those names make sense. They somewhat describe the phone in a general sense. What does chocolate have to do with anything. It isn't a traditional "candybar" style phone since its a slider, i hope to god it isn't brown (looks blackish in the pics), and i hope they don't make a lame reference to melting in your mouth, not in your hand or something.

and come on, throw a 2 megapixel camera in it. otherwise its just a sliding 8300
how does the "V" make sense? what does that have to do with anything that phone does or how it looks? you only think it makes sense because of good marketing. and if verizon and lg do their job here, chocolate will make sense too. although i will admi...

The Chocolate phone was originally released in Korea and the black model of it had the scent of chocolate. The white had the scent of lavendar and the pink the scent of roses.
...
It's a name that was popular in Korea. The Korean and European versions look a lot sleeker (thus the Chocolate Bar look) which is probably why they chose it. This is probably a good example of how marketing a single name across different cultures ca...

I miss the hidden D pad

I really liked the hidden touch sensitive keys on the original. That was a huge selling point for me. It's still a nice looking phone, just sad they decided to kill the hidden keys ☚ī¸
two birds, same stone, they wanted it to look like an Ipod I guess...
BTW:

The 8500 is also touch sensitive, including the touchwheel.

The only difference is that the original had the flat surface and this one is flat with an concave wheel built into it.
...
I must say I seemed to have fallen for the hidden D pad which was also a HUGE selling point for me.It gave it the finishing "touch" 🤤 in my opinion. Its not a major dealbreaker... Im sure I will still buy the verizon version since I have no othe...

I agree, that was a really key part of its design for me too. Again, not a dealbreaker though.

Now I'm on the fence for this one or the Samsung 990 due out soon as well... The 990 has wicked tech, but I think I might be in the market for a slick ...

Lucky verizon

Why not a GSM version with a memory card? Well, at least the verizon version isn't as cool lookinag at the GSM version.
when the motorola capri(codename) comes out(hopefully they will add WCDMA/UMTS/HSDPA on it later, that would be so cool) this will really compete against the blade, katana, chocolate, watever, and t-mobile is releasing the sk3 so i think we on the GSM...

a gsm version of the chocolate (tri band, not quad, i believe) has already launched in europe. there's nothing to say that same gsm model won't be launching in the US as well- only with 850 1800 1900. my guess for a carrier, because they have a strong...

meh correct me if im wrong...and i know u will :P...

Take an 8300 and change the way it looks alittle maybe even change the ui alittle and call it chocolate 😕
i think that's kindof like saying take a volkswagen jetta, change the way it looks, maybe even change a few other bits around and call it an audi a4. they're similar, but they're definitely not the same.
Well the main difference is the touch sensitive controls out front. It may be a gimmick, but when I touched it (and yes I have already played with both variants of Chocolate), it was WAAAAAY Cool.

I've been in the business for 10 years on the har...

nobody seems to like the name...

Why? Everybody here seems to hate "Chocolate"... I like it. The down side would be that's it's misleading, bc you cannot eat your phone, but it is a catchy though.
Anyway, get ready, you'll hear it every where, and they will MAKE YOU like it.
i like the "chocolate" name too. And who says you can't eat your phone??!!??!

😁
...
I like the name myself and think that it is actually a pretty creative marketing tactic by LG. The problem that most people seem to have with the name is that they are taking it literally (blame the RAZR). The phone isn't brown and we all know it does...

Chocolate phones in Korea originally was scented to remind people of chocolate (I didn't know chocolate had a scent).

It was a marketing thing and in 7 weeks of launch outside Korea, LG has sold over a million phones.

eric lin: the chocolate defender

ok. wow. does it seem like i'm sticking up for the chocolate a little too much? sorry. i'm just happy there are phones coming out that aren't razr clones. it's not that i dislike the razr, or even its clones. it's that it's time for some fresh new phone designs.
no i agree 100% with you. i believe the phone is an amazing design. It's not a New design by any means, but it's innovative when it comes to mobile phones. And i believe "Chocolate" is a great name. I can't wait to see what they do with the commercial...
