LG Display to Step Up OLED Production
LG Display plans to invest $396 million to improve its ability to manufacture flexible OLED displays and OLED lighting panels. The company will sink about $272 million into an existing facility in order to boost production capacity, and about $123 million to build a new production line dedicated to OLED lighting. Last year, the company committed close to $1 billion to build a new OLED factory. LG uses flexible OLED displays in some of its smartphones and wearable devices. The G5, LG's latest flagship handset, uses an LCD panel rather than OLED.
Micro-LED Backlights Could Bring OLED Performance to LCD Screens
AT CES this week, Rohinni demonstrated its micro-LED technology, and provided a glimpse at new backlight technology it's working on for the LCD display panels used in phones. While most LED chips are around 1mm, Rohinni's micro-LEDs are many times smaller and can be placed precisely on thin, flexible plastic sheets.
Lumia 950 is Microsoft's Flagship Windows 10 Phone
Microsoft today announced the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, its own flagship phones for its new OS, Windows 10. The phones support Windows Continuum for an optional full Windows Desktop experience when connected to a desktop monitor.
LG Turning to OLED for V30's FullVision Display
LG today said its "next flagship smartphone" — widely believed to be the V30 — will be the first to adopt a plastic OLED FullVision display. LG has used plastic OLED before, notably on the 2015 Flex 2, which was in fact curved and flexible.
Google to Rely On Software to Tweak Pixel 2 XL Screen, Pixel 2 Noise Issues
Google says it will update both the Pixel 2 XL and Pixel 2 smartphones in the coming weeks to resolve various issues spotted by early adopters. Starting with the Pixel 2 XL, Google says it will give users more options to tweak the screen's color through a tool added to the display settings.

LG Display today said it plans to invest about $8.5 billion in OLED displays for television sets, smartphones, and wearables. The company wants to boost its capabilities with the technology to stay ahead of the adoption curve as OLED becomes more mainstream.
