Google today expanded the ecosystem of devices compatible with its casting technology to include standalone displays. The company partnered with Vizio and has added direct casting support to Vizio's P Series displays as well as Vizio's soundbars and speakers. This means people will be able to cast video and music content directly to the display, rather than through a separate dongle that's plugged into the TV to stereo system. Vizio's P Series TVs can receive casted content up to 4K in resolution. Along with the ecosystem expansion, Google has updated the Chromecast app, renaming the app to Google Cast. Google said the revised app will reach Android and iOS devices later this week. Google Cast relies on WiFi to connect smartphones and tablets to multimedia gear.
