Fiat Chrysler to Support Android Auto, CarPlay
Fiat Chrysler today followed Ford in voicing support for Google's Android Auto and Apple's CarPlay interfaces. The fourth generation of Fiat Chrysler's Uconnect platform will add the smartphone-linking software to select 2016 models. Both Android Auto and CarPlay allow smartphones to push certain content to the in-dash infotainment center for accessing maps, music, messaging, and calling features. Fiat Chrysler did not say which cars will gain the latest Uconnect platform, nor exactly when it will begin the rollout.
Audi and Volvo to Adopt Android Auto
Google today said carmakers Audi and Volvo plan to build Android Auto into their next generation of cars. The companies already offer limited support for the platform in select cars.
Android Auto Hits the Play Store for Lollipop Phones
Google today made Android Auto, its platform for connecting to car-based infotainment systems, available as an app in the Play Store. With the app and compatible car, Android smartphone owners will be able to access navigation, calls and messaging, Google Search, and their music through the car's screen rather than their phone.
Hyundai Makes Android Auto and CarPlay Available As a Do-It-Yourself Install
Hyundai today made it possible for owners of select models to install Android Auto and CarPlay themselves. Hyundai owners will need to download the navigation system update from Hyundai's web site to a USB drive or SD card and then update the car manually.
Cadillac to Adopt CarPlay and Android Auto in 2016
Cadillac today said it will add support for Apple's CarPlay and Google's Android Auto in select 2016 model-year vehicles. Cadillac will adopt CarPlay in cars and trucks featuring its 8-inch in-dash unit first, with Android Auto to follow later in the year.
