Microsoft Backtracks On OneDrive Limits

Microsoft, responding to a firestorm of customer complaints, has softened the hard line it is taking with free OneDrive storage. In November, Microsoft surprised everyone by eliminating the unlimited storage option and severely restricting the amount of free storage given to customers. The company is keeping the 1TB limit proposed in November, but will allow existing customers to retain a higher percentage of their storage. Current OneDrive users can keep the 15GB of storage Microsoft historically offered, as well as the 15GB camera roll bonus — making for a total of 30GB of free storage. However, customers will have to reclaim these storage allotments before the end of January in order to keep them. Details will be sent via email. New customers will be given just 5GB of free OneDrive storage. Office 365 customers who have already exceeded 1TB in OneDrive consumption will be able to keep their current amount for a period of 12 months. Those who remain unhappy with the loss of unlimited storage can seek a refund.
