Qualcomm Intros Wireless Charging Through Metal
Qualcomm today announced new technology that allows metallic handsets to charge wirelessly. Most wireless charging pads are tolerant of some metal in the charging field, but Qualcomm says it was able to boost the sensitivity enough, via Near Field Magnetic Resonance technology, to allow for wireless charging through metal handset enclosures. Qualcomm's WiPower is based on the A4WP's Rezence standard and can deliver up to 22 watts of power to charge handsets wirelessly. Rezence pads can handle several different devices, with varying charging requirements, at a time. Qualcomm did not say when it expects to see the metallic device charging technology reach consumer handsets.
WattUp Distance Wireless Charging Coming To Major-Brand Phone

Energous has revealed that a "tier 1" consumer electronics company has agreed to implement WattUp wireless charging technology in a number of consumer products, including a phone. WattUp is an RF-based wireless charging technology that can be implemented in a number of ways, including transmitters that can send power wirelessly up to 15 feet, using a large array of antennas and beam-forming technology to send focused energy in the 5.8 GHz radio band.

The Power Matters Alliance and Alliance for Wireless Power today announced plans to fully merge organizations under the AirFuel Alliance brand. The standard-bearers for wireless charging agreed to work together earlier this year, and today's rebranding is the final step in the process of creating a single consortium committed to improving the standards for and experience of wireless charging.
