Intel to Work with Rezence for Wireless Charging

Intel today announced a new partnership with the Alliance for Wireless Power. Intel will adopt the A4WP's Rezence wireless charging standard and is working with a handful of device makers to bring wireless charging to public spaces, such as restaurants, hotels, and airports. Intel is initially looking to deploy A4WP across China. The company didn't immediately say if it plans to expand its A4WP project to other countries. Rezence is one of two major wireless charging standards in use by mobile devices, the other being the Wireless Power Consortium's Qi standard. In the U.S., Starbucks is adding Rezence to the tables in some of its coffee shops. Intel also announced that its Thunderbolt 3 cable will use the USB Type C connector, which is reversible and supports power flow in both directions. Google is adding support for USB Type C to Android M, due to arrive later this year. Intel didn't say if it would offer Thunderbolt speeds to mobile devices.

For a phone to support mmWave 5G, multiple specialty antenna modules need to be added, which can raise a phone's price by $50 – 100.

Apple has revealed the iPhone 15 series, which moves to a USB-C connector and brings several key features from last year's Pro models to the more-affordable standard models. These include the pill-shaped sensor cutout in the display that Apple calls Dynamic Island, a brighter display that can reach 2000 nits, a 48 megapixel main camera, and the A16 Bionic processor chip.

Apple today announced a major expansion of its Wallet app to support many new kinds of keys and cards, getting closer to the goal of fully replacing all of your physical wallet and keys. In addition to the previously-announced digital car key feature, Wallet will now support smart home front door locks, government ID cards — include US state driver's licenses — corporate ID cards, hotel keys, and theme park passes.

AT&T, Verizon Agree to Hold Back C Band 5G Near Airports

AT&T and Verizon are moving forward with this week's launch of 5G service in the new C Band, but have voluntarily agreed to new restrictions around airports at the request of major US airlines. The airlines have asked for 5G in the C Band to be banned within two miles of airport runways, a limitation that will severely reduce availability of the service in some cities.
