Opera Software today announced Opera Max App Pass, a tool that allows network operators to give customers limited access to select mobile applications at no cost. Opera Max is one of Opera's mobile browsers. It uses server-side compression to reduce data consumption. As long as Opera Max is installed, operators can provide customers with free access to a handful of apps with no charge against the customer's data plan. According to Opera, carriers can use App Pass to coax customers into using mobile data. Opera said sponsored and paid passes to apps are coming shortly. Opera expects Opera Max App Pass to be used mostly in emerging markets.
