Sprint Nextel announced plans to buy Mobitex service provider Velocita Wireless. Velocita operates a Mobitex 2-way paging network in the 900 MHz spectrum. Due to the decrease in paging subscribers, Sprint will be able to use Velocita's network to boost Nextel's coverage in some areas without affecting Mobitex customers. The acquisition is expected to close in the first half of 2006, pending government approval.

More Iden?

I kind of thought the idea was to migrate current iden users to cdma, not build up more iden coverage.

Sprint will send a message if they really build out more iden. That message is that iden is going to be around for quite some time.

Its probably not going to be all that easy to migrate iden customers and sprint may have realized that. They might also realize that iden needs better coverage in the short term. There are a lot places that i've been to where iden coverage is rather poor.
the iden network will be given to the government by 2010.

sprint nextel iden

i believe that the idea behind their actions is to gain as much coverage as they can while still using iden and cdma. I think that they are going to be developing devices kind of like cingular's gait phones that used gsm and tdma, except they will use both iden and cdma, and allow for usage of both of the towers. Not positive though.
