Samsung To Produce Chips For Qualcomm

Qualcomm today announced they will outsource production of some CDMA and WCDMA chipsets to Samsung. Qualcomm outsources production of all their chips however they have typically used companies with no other interests in the cellular market. Samsung's mobile phone division is the largest customer for Qualcomm CDMA chips, so it is rather interesting that another arm of the company will be manufacturing Qualcomm chips. It is possible that Samsung will be able to purchase the chips they produce for Qualcomm at a reduced price, however this is not mentioned in the details of the relationship. Samsung already fabricates their own CDMA chips, which the company uses in some of their Korean handsets. They will not be forced to suspend production of these chips in order to work with Qualcomm.
