EU Approves Facebook's Acquisition of WhatsApp

The European Union has blessed Facebook's proposed acquisition of WhatsApp. The deal, announced in February, is worth about $19 billion and is Facebook's largest. The EU was the last regulatory body standing in the way, as the deal was approved by U.S. regulators in April. WhatsApp is an over-the-top messaging service that allows people to message one another through their data plan rather than through traditional SMS channels. Earlier this year, WhatsApp announced plans to add voice calling capabilities, though that feature has yet to be woven into the app. Facebook has not said exactly when the deal will close.
