Microsoft Sues Acacia Over Patents
Microsoft filed a lawsuit against Acacia Research this week over a broken contract pertaining to smartphone patents. Microsoft signed an agreement with an Acacia subsidiary in 2010 to license some of its mobile device patents. Last month, other Acacia subsidiaries sued Microsoft for violating about a dozen mobile device patents. Microsoft's lawsuit is a response to the first. Acacia and its subsidiaries are owned by Access, which is based in Japan.

An appeals court has sided with Microsoft and upheld a 2013 verdict that says Motorola has to pay Microsoft for refusing to license standard-essential patents at fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory rates. This particular case began in 2010, when Microsoft sued Motorola for failing to pay it patent-licensing fees for technology found in Motorola's Android smartphones.
Coolpad Sues Xiaomi Over Patents

Coolpad's China-based business has sued Xiaomi for violating its patented technology. Coolpad Group's Yulong Computer Telecommunications Scientific business unit filed lawsuits against three Xiaomi entities: Xiaomi Telecom Technology, Xiaomi Technology, and Xiaomi Factory.
