NJ Pushes to Make Texting at Red Lights Illegal

The state of New Jersey is considering a law that would make it illegal to send messages or make voice calls when drivers are stopped at a light, sign, or in traffic. The bill, proposed by State Sen. Richard Codey, aims to get New Jersey's laws in line with federal guidelines on distracted driving. It is already illegal to send text messages from behind the wheel in the Garden State. New Jersey's lawmakers contend that cell phone use poses a hazard even when the car is stopped temporarily because they divert driver attention from the driving conditions at hand. NJ recently voted in favor of increasing the fines for texting offenses from $100 to between $200 and $400, depending on the circumstances involved. It's not clear when NJ might vote on this latest bill.

NJ is REALLY appealing these days
Yet another reason not to live in New Jersey. So, they have one of the worst Airports in the country, they want to make texters liable when they should or "OUGHT" to have known they are texting somebody who is driving, they want to outlaw texting at a red. I also remember watching a Devils stanley cup finals game in East Rutherford, and half the damn arena was empty in a finals game! Oh, and Zoolander portrays New Jersey as a place inhabited by dirty coal miners.

Of course, why not enforce the ban on TALKING while driving first...
I see so many people in NJ (and NY where it's equally illegal to talk on the phone without a headset) holding their phone as they drive around. This seems like an easier offense to enforce and rarely do people seem to get stopped or feel they shouldn't be obviously doing that while driving. If you are stopped at a red light, that is sorta the best time to do it, though if you say it's illegal to type while behind the wheel that would seem to cover it all...

Those with a clue know that when it comes to reporting negative stories about Democrats that the media will give their party a little cover by hiding or omitting the individual's party affiliation, but if the negative story is about a Republican then the party affiliation is required to be in either the first sentence or headline. Zeman is proudly abiding by these J-school rules by neglecting to mention that State Sen. Richard Codey, the man behind this laughably stupid legislation, is a Democrat. Well played Zeman! You get a gold star because no one noticed! 😉
