The ComCARE Alliance, an umbrella group for organizations involved in public safety - from healthcare providers to law enforcement, have requested that the FCC maintain its December 31 E911 deadline. The deadline mandates that carriers which use phone-based location systems show that 95% of subscribers have location capable phones by the end of 2005. The CTIA and Rural Carrier Association already petitioned the FCC to have the deadline extended or dropped. Now local organizations in mostly rural states are also joining in, joining forces in hopes of convincing the FCC to grant waivers to specific locales and carriers. Rural users tend to rely on analog phones still since digital coverage is less reliable or non existent in many less populous areas.
