Qualcomm Joins the Power Matters Alliance
The Power Matters Alliance today announced that Qualcomm has joined as its 100th member. Qualcomm will help push the PMA's wireless charging specification forward. Qualcomm has separately developed its own QuickCharge technology, which uses its processors to speed up the charging process when devices are plugged into the wall. The PMA is mounting a challenge to competing standards Qi and the Alliance for Wireless Power. Earlier this year, the PMA won support from AT&T, BlackBerry, Google, HTC, Huawei, Kyocera, LG, Samsung, Starbucks, and ZTE. Further, AT&T mandated that its handset partners incorporate the PMA wireless charging standard into their devices by 2014. Verizon Wireless supports the Qi standard and a number of Verizon's handset already include Qi technology. The consumer electronics industry has yet to settle on a single standard. Qualcomm now belongs to all three groups.
PMA and A4WP Rebrand As the AirFuel Alliance
The Power Matters Alliance and Alliance for Wireless Power today announced plans to fully merge organizations under the AirFuel Alliance brand. The standard-bearers for wireless charging agreed to work together earlier this year, and today's rebranding is the final step in the process of creating a single consortium committed to improving the standards for and experience of wireless charging.
Starbucks Officially Debuts Wireless Charging in Shops
Starbucks has begun to deploy wireless charging stations at select coffee shops in the San Francisco Bay Area. The company said 200 stores now offer wireless charging spots on tables and coffee bars.
A4WP and PMA to Merge Wireless Power Businesses
The Alliance for Wireless Power and the Power Matters Alliance today announced plans to fully merge the two entities into a single organization. The two groups created separate, competing wireless charging standards until February 2014, when they agreed to work tougher on a compatible standard.
Starbucks to Expand Wireless Charging to More Stores
Starbucks is prepared to increase the availability of wireless charging stations at its coffee shops. The company has been trialling the technology in San Francisco and Boston for some time, and has decided to make a broader push first by expanding across the entire Bay Area and then to other regions.
