HTC announced a new PDA phone called Universal which will be the first UMTS device running Windows Mobile. The Universal has a twist and flip body with a VGA screen, large QWERTY keyboard and dual cameras for video calling and pictures / video recording. In addition to GSM/GPRS/UMTS for voice and data, the Universal also has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. HTC plans a world-wide release, including North America for the second half of 2005. T-Mobile Germany has already announced the Universal as the MDA IV. That model is a triband 900/1800/1900 phone with UMTS 2100. Previously HTC has released the same device with multiple radio configurations, it is possible they are planning a model with HSDPA 850/1900 for Cingular's imminent 3G network.

So, UTMS 2100 won't work in the US?

So am I to assume that when cingular's network comes out they are supposed to be going with a bidirectional 1900mhz setup. In UTMS 2100, both 1900 and 2100mhz are used (one inbound and one outbound). So am I to assume that if I purchase this phone overseas that it will NOT work here in the United States for the faster 3G speed?
Correct hrana98.

UTMS in the US (unless the govt adds spectrum) will be @ 1900Mhz for Cingular (and TMobile when they get off their butts).

HTC has been known for releasing devices with multiple band configurations...

I would anticipate this will be one of those devices.

Expect a GSM 850/1800/1900 UMTS 850/1900 version of this devices also.

Yea. I also tired of the pain of being a Verizon customer. So... I canceled my account with Verizon and moved to Cingular; and bought a new Imate Jam. I must say that in terms of service, I have been just as happy with Cingular as I was with Verizo...

Hmm... lets try some facts. Yes, GSM is more widespread. That is because most of those countries have a government mandated wireless network. Some asian countries and more than 20 european countries had their governments set GSM as the standard. Remem...
