Yahoo Purchases Mobile Recommendations Company
Yahoo today confirmed that it has purchased a small company called Alike. Similar to Foursquare, Alike allows users to recommend or "favorite" locations or venues based on their preferences and proximity. Alike will be joining Yahoo's mobile team. The company will no longer support its separate iOS and web-based apps. Neither Yahoo nor Alike has shared the purchase price for the transaction.
Yahoo Adds Package Tracking to iOS Mail App
Yahoo today announced an update to its Mail App for iOS devices an added the ability to automatically track packages. According to Yahoo, users will see their shipments from Amazon, eBay, Zappos, Target, Best Buy, Macys.com, and others under the "Yahoo Today" section of the app, which will display shipping date, item description, and expected arrival.
Yahoo Adds Gmail Support to Yahoo Mail
Yahoo Mail today gained the ability to manage Gmail and Google Apps accounts. Yahoo relaunched the app in October and made it compatible with AOL, Hotmail, and Outlook.
Yahoo to Cut Mail Support for Older iPhones
Yahoo today said it plans more cuts to its product lineup in the interest of focusing on core businesses. To start, Yahoo will no longer support Yahoo Mail in the built-in iOS mail app for devices running iOS 4 and older.
Yahoo Ditching Facebook/Google Login for Flickr
Yahoo recently indicated via its support pages that it will soon no longer support Facebook or Google login for Flickr. Yahoo first revealed plans to remove Facebook/Google login back in March.
Yahoo to Sunset Yet More Products, Intro IMAP Email
Yahoo today indicated the company is taking steps to further reduce the number of products and services it offers. Most of the cutbacks announced by Yahoo today affect localized web sites in South America, Europe, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region.
