Sprint today announced they would cooperate with Intel on the development and testing of WiMAX mobile equipment. WiMAX mobile, also known as 802.16e is a version of the WiMAX wireless broadband data standard that can be used in portable electronics. The current WiMAX standard can only be used to beam data between two fixed points with line of sight to each other, however it is capable of speeds up to 70 Mbps. WiMAX and WiMAX mobile operate on the 2.5 GHz band, which both Sprint and Nextel own swaths of in various markets. Sprint's soon-to-be-partner Nextel has previously experimented with another wireless broadband technology known as Flarion OFDM.
