Samsung and Kodiak Networks have entered a joint marketing agree where the two will offer end to end Push To Talk (PTT) Systems to carriers. Kodiak will supply the software technology while Samsung will supply Kodiak-ready handsets. As part of the agreement, Samsung will produce Kodiak PTT handsets for GSM, CDMA and UMTS networks. It has been rumored Cingular is favoring Kodiak for their PTT launch. Since Samsung is one of Cingular's major handset suppliers, this new agreement may lend an air of truth to those rumors.

My fear about more PTT availability

OK, I understand that there are some great uses for PTT devices, particularly in specific job roles. The problem is that there is already a problem with people being very inconsiderate to others with it's use and I fear that the problem will only get worse with the expansion of availability from other carriers.

For example, I've been in restaurants and had to listen to the repeated beeps and the conversation back & forth while I'm trying to eat. I have heard of extreme instances (in the news, not local) where people have been told to turn it off or leave, but I think we need "No PTT" sections to go along with the "No Smoking" sections. 🤣

Again, I know the technology has it's uses, but it seems there are just way too many people...

PTT

This will be big if this is released by Cingular. I know ATTWS was testing PTT with the Motorola V400. I work for this company and it will be awesome if this came out. Cingular would be pretty much known as an all in one company! Nextel, Sprint and Verizon are going to have a lot of competition if this is released by Cingular. Time will tell.
Cingular was testing this with moto too. it was supposed to be called a V400p. GSM PTT will never be as strong as nextel's though

GSM PTT may get better, but Cingular has pushed back it's launch at least a couple times in the past year - hopefully that means the final service will be quality?

PTT=M2M

I don't really understand the functunality of PTT. Isn't it the same as M2M. So it takes an extra 3 seconds to call someone by scrolling through your phonebook. Or if you recently dialed the number press send on your phone and the recent call menu appears. And you wonder why Nextel has never offered free M2M.

No one is that busy that they need an instant connnection.

I think you get the point.

nextel doesnt need to offer m2m and it would be not the best idea to do that. why? well becuase direct connect or push to talk is cheap m2m (mins ) are expensive. another thing, m2m takes up a lot of bandwidth that nextel cant spare right now becuase ...
