Apple today made the iPhone 5 available for sale unlocked and without a contract through its U.S. web site. The 16GB model costs $649, the 32GB model costs $749, and the 64GB model costs $849. All three models list as shipping in one week. The iPhone is also still available with a contract from AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon Wireless. According to Apple, the unlocked iPhone will only work on GSM networks such as those run by AT&T or T-Mobile. Unlocked iPhones will not work on Sprint or Verizon's networks. Travelers will be able to use unlocked iPhones on the GSM-based networks of foreign carriers.
