Broadcom has made samples available of a new chipset allowing manufacturers to create an advanced 3G platform from just four chips. Broadcom's minimalist platform could help manufacturers create 3G phones that rival 2G models in size and power consumption while surpassing them in function. Phones built using Broadcom's platform would feature WCDMA plus GSM/GPRS EDGE for cellular connectivity, Bluetooth, and an advanced multimedia processor capable of controlling a camera up to 8 Megapixels, recording or playing back VGA video at 30 fps and other advanced functions.
