Qualcomm Restructures to Protect Patents

Qualcomm today announced a change to its internal corporate structure that should better safeguard its intellectual property. Qualcomm is creating a wholly owned subsidiary called Qualcomm Technologies Inc. that will operate Qualcomm’s research and development business, as well as its product and services businesses, which includes Qualcomm's semiconductor unit. The new unit will then begin to work more with open source technologies and protect Qualcomm's 3G and 4G patents from being licensed out due to their activities. Qualcomm expects the restructuring to be complete by the end of its first fiscal 2013 quarter.
