Microsoft today announced several new consumer-facing features that will be available in Windows Phone 8, which is due to arrive later this year. Most importantly, the new system software will have a revised start screen. The new version of the home screen adds support for more Live Tile sizes and shapes, and gives all developers access to those tiles. Previously, only carriers, manufacturers, and Microsoft had access to the "double-wide" Live Tile. Microsoft said this change is being made to accommodate user requests to further customize their home screen experience. WP8 device owners will be able to adjust the size of any app or service to one of three different Live Tile sizes. Additionally, the home screen will lose the trough that appears on the right side of the start screen. The start screen will now fill the entire display on Windows Phone 8 devices.
