Spotify Intros Free Option
Streaming music service Spotify today revealed a free option that lets mobile users in the US listen to music for free, supported by audio ads. The option is available only on iOS devices for now. The mobile app previously cost $10/month to use. The free version lets users tailor the music played to types of music and artists they like. Upgrading to the $10/month service lets users choose songs. Competing services Pandora, Slacker, and Songza already offer a free version of their service.

Starbucks today expanded the scale of its mobile application to include Spotify-backed music discovery. People who visit Starbucks stores will be able to use the Starbucks mobile app to discover what songs are being played in-store and save those songs to a personal Spotify playlist.

New York and Connecticut want to be sure Apple Music, the new streaming service announced by Apple this week, doesn't violate antitrust rules. Universal Music Group, responding to requests from the attorneys general of New York and Connecticut, said it is not colluding with Apple nor its rivals to impede competition in the music streaming market.
