Motorola today announced an agreement with Nextel to extend its iDEN supply agreements through the end of 2007. The deal includes continued expansion and upgrades of base station and network equipment, as well as current and future iDEN phones, for both Nextel and subsidiary Boost Mobile. New iDEN phones to be introduced in the next 12 months include models with WiDEN technology that increases data rates up to four times faster compared to current iDEN devices. Separately, Nextel CEO Timothy Donahue said yesterday that Motorola will make a dual-mode phone for Nextel and Sprint that will work on both iDEN and CDMA networks, to ease the transition of Nextel customers to CDMA technology. update: Motorola spokesperson Steve Hendricks confirmed that the company will create such a phone for Sprint Nextel, although product planning has just begun this week.

Easing everyone's fears...

No need to panic, you're Nextel rig will continue to work just fine for the next couple of years.
But then you have to be a part of Sprint PCS, no way. I've already cancelled my Nextel account and so has my employer. We used to have Sprint and will never touch or give one cent to that terrible company again. Bad move Nextel.
