Openwave today announced that it has agreed to sell its Mediation and Messaging product businesses to Marlin Equity Partners for an undisclosed sum. Marlin Equity will continue to operate the Mediation and Messaging business units under the new names of Openwave Mobility and Openwave Messaging. Openwave itself will rename the organization to Unwired Planet and pursue a patent-licensing strategy moving forward. Openwave licensed some of its intellectual property to Microsoft as recently as November 2011, and sued Apple and RIM over patents in August 2011. The companies expect the deal to close by the end of the month.
