ESPN and Sprint today announced ESPN Mobile, ESPN's own national wireless service specifically targeted at sports fans. The service will launch in 2005, using the Sprint PCS network. ESPN Mobile will sell ESPN-branded handsets, accessories and applications. ESPN Mobile will be responsible for billing, customer relations, pricing, packaging, distribution and other operational aspects of the business. The offering will be structured as an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator), with Sprint supplying network infrastructure and spectrum, similar to Sprint's relationship with Virgin Mobile.
