Qualcomm last week outlined plans for a new family of chipsets for advanced mobile phones. The MSM7xxx series will feature dual processors on a single chip - one for multimode communications, and one for high-performance application processing. The new design will allow the application processor to be powered off when not in use, preserving battery life. The application processor in each chip will be ARM11-based, ranging in speed from 300 MHz to 1GHz. Chips in the series will support various wireless technologies, including CDMA2000, 1xEV-DO, 1xEV-DV, GSM/GPRS, WCDMA/UMTS, as well as HSDPA, 802.11, and GPS. Samples are expected to ship in 2004.
