SanDisk today introduced miniSD, a new type of thumbnail-sized flash memory card for mobile phones. miniSD was recently adopted by the SD Association as an ultra-small form factor extension to the SD card standard. SanDisk expects to begin volume shipments of 16MB miniSD cards in the next 30 days, with sizes reaching 256MB by the end of the year. SanDisk miniSD cards will be packaged with a full-sized SD adapter. The format was developed in cooperation wtih Toshiba and Matsushita, and will compete against the RS-MMC format announced by the MultiMediaCard Association in November, and the Memory Stick Duo format from Sony. All three formats are incompatible.
