AT&T Wireless in recent government filings indicates it will switch E-911 technologies. The carrier also will pay more than $2 million in fines to the FCC for missing an Oct. 2001 deadline to begin installing certain E-911 equipment. AT&T indicated that its previous technology choice - E-OTD - is not meeting FCC accuracy requirements in tests. Cingular expressed similar concern with E-OTD recently. While AT&T will continue limited trials of EOTD, it plans to switch to TDOA technology for its GSM network. AT&T Wireless already uses TDOA on its TDMA networks.
