SkyTower, Inc., in collaboration with the Japan Ministry of Telecommunications (CRL/TAO) and NASA, yesterday announced the successful completion of a series of tests conducted from Pathfinder-Plus, an unmanned solar-electric aircraft. The craft climbed to more than 65,000 feet over the island of Kauai, where onboard equipment transmitted several hours of 3G mobile voice, data, and video services to multiple handheld user devices on the ground. This new solution, which flies above clouds and commercial air traffic, is equivalent to a 12-mile high tower, giving it a coverage area 30 to 600 miles in diameter. Production versions of the craft will be able to stay airborne for six months or more without landing.
