AT&T Wireless today introduced a suite of location-based services. The services can determine the location of a wireless user - with consent - automatically, without entering zip code or address information. The suite includes "Find Friends", a new service that offers participating users the ability to locate friends and colleagues and arrange to meet nearby. Also new is a location-enabled version of the go2 service, which provides customers with directions to nearby restaurants, movies, ATMs, and gas stations. The services are part of AT&T's mMode service, which operates over the company's growing GSM/GPRS network. Unlike upcoming E-911 Phase II-compliant systems, the system announced today is only accurate to the nearest cell tower, which could cover an area as large as several miles.
