Royal Philips Electronics today announced it has begun shipping volume quantities of its PolyLED modules - a polymer-based organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display technology. Philips is the industry's first polymer OLED supplier to achieve this major milestone. Initial shipments are monochrome displays, although Philips will be showcasing its multi-color and full-color PolyLED prototypes during the 2002 Symposium for Information Display (SID) in mid-May. PolyLED technology boasts high brightness and contrast, large-angle viewing, low-voltage operation, and fast switching speeds at low power consumption. In addition, because they require no backlighting, PolyLED displays will be thin and lightweight, and are ideal for applications including advanced mobile devices.
