You might want to try formatting the card with the phone or another device.
Menu->My Stuff->Memory Card
However, the cards are usually formatted at the factory. I don't think it is possible to 'format' the phone. It is possible that the memory card is 'locked'.
Check these things.

Menu->Settings->Audio & Ringtones->Message Alert Tones.
There are only 10 different tones on the phone but more can be added.

The cu500 is very picky about which memory cards will work with the phone. Apparently, Cingular will only guarantee that cards produced by Sandisk will work with this phone. I bought a cheapo card from Office Depot and it did not work in this phone even though it does work in other devices. I don't know about which USB cables work well with this phone. However, this phone is designed to use bluetooth and it works flawlessly. Bluetooth would not be your best option if you are going to tranfer a lot of mp3 files to the microSD card. It's too slow! Using bluetooth you can transfer contacts, files, etc. to and from your phone and computer. Bluetooth accessories, such as USB dongles, can be picked up for ~10 dollars.
